Initial Registration per student $60.
* Membership tuition based on year round continuous participation. If notified in advance, arrangements for make up lessons can be made case by case and scheduled before or after an absence. Observation of fellow students in the studio. All students are invited and encouraged to observe other students in the program. See Observation policy.
Group Instruction. To develop motivation all students are encouraged to participate in Group Lesson Activities. All levels of students are invited to perform in recitals and Play-in-the Park activities. Please see Studio Calendar.
Ensemble participation. Students who are developing reading skills by the middle of Book 2 may want to look for opportunities to play with an ensemble in one of the programs where Ms. Cynthia teaches. A wide variety of ethnic fiddling is also available. Please let Ms. Cynthia know of your interest. If you are interested in joining a school orchestra please let Ms. Cynthia know about the auditions involved well in advance so she can assist you.
SMAC Festivals, Workshops, Institutes. All Suzuki Students from Twinklers and up are encouraged to participate.
High School students who have the desire to start the violin are usually very self motivated. You may not realize how critical it is to develop listening habits that support violin study. Initially, these students need a parent's guidance and encouragement to establish the habits of effective musical study. Allow your parents to attend your first few lessons and support your efforts by helping you get everything organized for effective study. You may want some one to help take notes during lessons and make sure you have the equipment you need for listening and practice at home. If you have a video camera you may want them to help you record some of your lessons so that you don't miss anything. It is important to have good communication between parents and Ms. Cynthia when making any changes in your regular lessons schedule and tuition.
High School students are expected to start keeping track of their own music, musical equipment and practice habits and routines. The better organized you are the more listening and practicing you will be able to do and the more progress you will make toward your musical goals.
High School Students learn the following violin skills through the study of the Twinkle Variations:
Develop daily listening habits and activities that will assist them with memorizing pieces and play them in tune.
Master basic skills and reliable routines that will take the student through the rest of Book I with reasonable ease.
Learn 4-5 Twinkle Rhythms and Theme
Develop bow hold by balancing fingers
Develop endurance to balance violin on the shoulder and hold bow long enough to play a Twinkle Variations which will become their first Tonalization when they place the bow on the open strings.
Learn to play bow patterns for each Twinkle Rhythm with music while maintaining a bow hold and bow arm which will give them a deep tone for future pieces in Book I.
Learn how to break down a piece of music into its important components and practice them effectively.
Once you complete playing Twinkle variations with good intonation and tone you will have time to consider developing beginning reading skills that will need in orchestra..
These methods and practice habits will be recycled so that each student can begin making progress on pieces in Book I after the student can play Twinkle with fingers. Depending on your experience and ability to focus, you may only need a week or two of PreTwinkle activity and preparation before starting the use of the violin. This will give your parents time to consult Ms. Cynthia about choosing the right instrument for you.
Students will continue reviewing all pieces as they progress and develop the ability to play them from memory. By polishing review pieces students develop mastery of skills which will make newer piece more accessible.

Private Instruction for 45-60 minute weekly lesson.
60 minute lesson time recommended for:
Students who expects to take significant breaks for family travel which are difficult to make up.
Students who find themselves progressing quickly to longer pieces in Book II and III
Students who plan to enter school programs in should seriously consider starting private instruction with our program in May or June before hand so that they can get a running start to develop basic skills, practice habits and become comfortable on their instrument before school starts. This is a great way to avoid learning bad habits which will be difficult to change.

Suzuki Violin CD Vol. I Revised Edition
This is the minimum listening for effective study.
Students are encouraged to listen ahead at least one book level above the book they are currently studying in to progress more quickly.

The more listening students do the more easily they will acquire reading skills when ready.
There are 3 kinds of listening that students need to do to be successful: Preview, Current, Review and General exposure to Violin Music. We use the Single Repeat button on our listening device to memorize pieces that will be studied in class. High School student will be listening to each Twinkle Variation in this way so that they can play them in class spontaneously with out fear. At the same time begin to preview the Vol. 1 CD so that you will already have familiarity with those pieces when you start working on them.
New High School Students will find it helpful to read as much of the required reading as possible before starting. Take time to read these pages so you can be prepared for your first classes and have everything you need at home to practice effectively on those things that Older Beginners need to start doing first before picking up the instrument.

When PreTwinkle skills are mastered students will need several items for the violin outfit :
Foam wedge, firm foam which will be custom trimmed for shoulder rest with real violin. Cloth, lint and chemical free for cleaning violin. File Bands for shoulder rest. Dr. Scholl's callus pads for chin rest. See important information above about obtaining a violin. Rosin, soft dark rosin in a slider box is recommended .
More information on violin care
A violin will not be needed for the first few lessons of the PreTwinkle process while the High School student is beginning to listen to the CD and working on the rhythms they will need to start working with their bow. A High School Beginner will begin using the bow with the music soon after they master basic listening and motor skills. A bow will be needed when students can arm slide all 4 Twinkle Variations. Depending on their previous experience and listening habits, most High School students progress quickly to this point.
Students will usually start with box violin and pencil bow the first week into the start of instruction. This will give you time to choose the right instrument to get you started as easily as possible.
Most students will need a 1/2 or 3/4 size violin. Please wait until Ms. Cynthia has had an opportunity to size you for an instrument. Scott Cao STV 017, is recommended when students can arm slide 4 Twinkles with the music. Each student will be measured for their unique body type and size by the teacher in the studio.
The violin outfit should include a wood bow with a proper grip and silver winding. A fiberglass is not adequate or reliable for making musical expression.
Please, Do not purchase an instrument with out consulting the teacher you plan to study with. It is nearly impossible to obtain refunds for musical instruments from a retailer.
I recommend that all of my students read the following books about the Suzuki Method. It is helpful to understand how we create our own environments and habits for learning something new. I hope this book gives you inspiration
